cmi5 is a profile of xAPI that fills in what xAPI leaves open: how an LMS launches a piece of content, how the session is identified, and which statements the content must send for the LMS to record a result.
It is sometimes described as the successor to SCORM, keeping SCORM's launch-and-report model while using xAPI to carry the data.
Like SCORM, it addresses content packaging rather than the live application integration that LTI® covers.
